Telegram is rolling out new privacy controls, including the ability to hide your last seen timestamp and limit how much of your profile people can see.

Starting today, the app will allow users to control who can see their last seen time stamp — a feature that has raised some privacy concerns in the past. User profiles on Telegram will now be divided into personal and public sections. Other features, such as phone number, profile photo, and status message will fall under the public section of a profile.

Telegram (Telegram下载) is rolling out new privacy controls, including the ability to hide your last seen timestamp and limit how much of your profile people can see.

In a blog post published today, Telegram announced it’s making some changes to its privacy settings to make them more granular. The first is hiding your last seen timestamp—a feature that lets users know if someone was looking at their messages recently. This can be useful for keeping track of when another person has read or received a message from you, but also means anyone who sees your contact list will know exactly when you were online last (and vice versa).

This feature is currently being rolled out across all platforms except Windows Phone 7/8 and Blackberry OS 10 (which weren’t mentioned). IOS and Android versions are expected next week; Windows Phone 8 should get this option by mid-May; Blackberry OS 10 will receive it sometime after mid-June; then finally Windows Phone 7/8 should have this feature sometime after the end of June.

Starting today, the app will allow users to control who can see their last seen time stamp — a feature that has raised some privacy concerns in the past.

The last-seen time stamp is a feature that shows when a user last used Telegram. It appears next to their profile picture and name in their chats list. The default setting for this feature is “off” for each chat and contact, meaning that it doesn’t show up by default unless you choose to turn it on by adjusting your settings in the new Privacy menu.

User profiles on Telegram will now be divided into personal and public sections

In this section, you will be able to choose who can see your profile.

Your profile is divided into two sections: public and personal. The public section is visible to everyone, while the personal section only appears when you grant access to it. You can grant access by inviting someone with whom you want to share this information or by granting access directly from your settings menu.

Other features, such as phone number

Other features, such as phone number, profile photo, and status message will fall under the public section of a profile.

This is so people can find you. To see your profile: on Telegram, tap the globe icon in the top right corner of the screen. You’ll see a list of all your contacts (and groups) appear; if you’re looking for yourself, scroll down until you reach “Me.” On other platforms such as Slack or Discord: search for ‘@username’ where the username is your username or handle (e.g., @user). To find someone else’s profile: search for ‘user/username’ where the user is their username and /or username indicates that this should be interpreted as a path rather than an exact match (e.g., user/user).

You’ll have more control over your privacy settings on Telegram

You’ll have more control over your privacy settings on Telegram. You can now hide your last seen timestamp from everyone but your contacts, or hide it from everyone except for the people you select.

The first option means that all of the people in your contact list will see a different timestamp than they would otherwise: when they look at their profile, it will still show that they last sent a message; however, anyone who looks at yours (or any other user’s) won’t be able to tell if you were online or not. This can be useful if you’re not necessarily trying to hide away—instead, this setting allows users to send messages without feeling pressure about whether or not they should send them right away because someone could find out if they waited too long before replying!
